Organisers are putting together a packed programme for this year's Diss Carnival.

And they are keeping fingers crossed that road works planned for a key part of the route will be completed before the big day on Sunday June 21.

Last year's re-launched event saw an estimated 5,000 people pack the town centre to see the parade of floats, and rescue dogs display in Diss Mere. The far higher attendance than expected meant refreshment outlets were swamped, but those problems have been addressed.

Carnival co-ordinator Doreen Collins said: “Over all it was a fantastic day for everyone, but there were one or two things we know we can do better and we reacting to the feedback we received. This year there will be three separate areas available for food and drink to try and alleviate the queues of last year.

“We are doing everything possible to get people involved again. We need to be a community and get everyone together. The road works start in mid-May so we are very hopeful everything will be okay, and we are keeping everything crossed.”

The county council will be carrying out improvements to Market Hill this summer - the route used by the carnival procession to access the town centre as there are no sharp bends to negotiate.

The competition to find this year's carnival queen and attendant will be launched soon. Attractions on the day will include children's fancy dress parade, displays of tractors, vintage cars and military vehicles, and martial arts, gymnastics and dancing.

To help the carnival run smoothly, volunteer stewards are required to help during the float parade and at the football ground.
