A couple whose son was born with a cleft lip and palate will hold a party in a bid to raise money for charity.

Sara Macpherson and Wayne Davies' sixth-month-old son Reks has already been through one operation and faces a second in April.

In a bid to raise awareness of the condition and the support surrounding it, the couple will host an evening of entertainment at Diss Cue Club on March 30 in aid of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA).

Ms Macpherson said that although the family had not drawn on the charity and its resources as much as they could have, they were grateful for its presence.

'They do so much work,' she added. 'They created the squeezy bottles that we use, for example, and we just wanted a bit of a party and a raffle and we've got the craziest prizes.

'I think you naturally want to give something back and we wanted to do some fundraising because I know if we needed extra help they would be there.'

So far Reks' lip has been corrected as well as part of his palate, while a second operation next month will fix this further.

Reks, who has been treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, will face a third operation at the age of about seven which will involve a bone graft to fix a notch in his gum.

He could also face having grommets and speech therapy, depending on how the condition progresses.

Ms Macpherson, 26, who lives with Reks' father, Mr Davies, 27, a web developer, on Mission Road, Diss, added: 'Obviously having a baby going through so many operations is scary but after he had his first operation he could make sounds he didn't make before and he can get better acoustics with his mouth now.

'The feeding was quite hard because he has no suction because of his palate so it's quite difficult getting the right teats and bottles, and the other thing is facing the outside world and hoping somebody doesn't look at you the wrong way or says anything.

'We did find it difficult but there's lots to learn at the beginning and you get through it somehow.'

The fundraising event will begin at 7.30pm and include a raffle, tombola, a disco, face painting and nibbles.

All are welcome.
