It was, according to organisers, a 'carnival to beat all carnivals'.

And residents and visitors to a Norfolk market town's annual celebration certainly thought so, as a record turnout came for this year's Diss Carnival.

An estimated 7,000 people filled the market town as vikings to vintage vehicles and everything in between paraded the streets.

The celebration continued in Mere Park with entertainment from the Vikings in battle and a Falcons display, to donkey rides and an It's a Knockout challenge featuring nearby businesses.

Council leader Graham Minshull said: 'It was a fantastic event. There were a lot of happy people with smiling faces and the weather was great.

'It was a big event, we estimate about 7,000 people attending.'

Resident Amy Bobbins said: 'It was an incredible day. The turnout far exceeded expectations.

'Heywood Health and Fitness helped to create the health and wellbeing zone, which included lots of stalls and performances in the Muga from some really talented local groups. And of course My Amazing Tribe too!

'There was a fantastic community feel to the whole day, a great atmosphere and response from the public.'

Lorraine Shankland, from Palgrave, said: 'I've been to the carnival for the past few years. I have to say that this year was one of the best ones I've been to. It is lovely to see such a huge turnout and have a sense of community spirit.'

Heather Babb, president of The Rotary Club of Diss and District said: 'A carnival to beat all carnivals.

'Well done to everyone on the committee who had the foresight to bring this event into the centre of the town and to use one of the most beautiful parks in the area, with views over the Mere.

'There was something for the whole family - lots of activities, food, drink and even the police horses were a draw for adults and children alike.

'The Rotary Club of Diss and District were proud to take part in the parade and to have a stall that was well supported by the public. Thank you Diss.'
