A publican is celebrating the success of a Scalextric grand prix which raised several hundred pounds for the air ambulance.

Top names from the motor racing world donated gifts for the charity event which was hosted by landlord Kevin Collins at the Cross Keys at Redgrave, on Saturday.

Mr Collins said the idea was sparked by a late night chat with customer Mike Bentley about when they were children.

The event saw competitors race their cars over a competition circuit and the action was screened on TV in both bars.

"It was quite a good day and we raised about £430 for the air ambulance," Mr Collins said. "The reason we chose the charity is because it saves lives in rural areas like Redgrave."

Among the items to be auctioned off was a print signed by Martin Brundle, which went for about £35, and a tour of the Greene King brewery in Bury St Edmunds which went for about £20.
