Villagers fighting the proposed closure of a rural post office are planning a public protest on Sunday to demonstrate their support.

More than 1,400 people signed a petition calling on Post Office Ltd to abandon plans to shut Scole post office, as part of its controversial shakeup of the national network.

Postmistress Kim Charles has also posted in excess of 500 letters on behalf of customers calling for a rethink, and is hoping for a good turnout on Sunday.

She said: “Please be there to show just how much the village supports the continuance of a post office in your village shop. This is our last chance before the June 2nd deadline to show how important this is to our village.”

The protest meeting will be held outside the stores at noon.

Those campaigning against the closure include rock star Rick Wakeman, who lives locally and has threatened to boycott post office services in future, and send out correspondence by email, if Scole PO is axed.
