After hours of teasing people with small snow flurries, the white stuff began to fall as darkness fell across the county.
Small flurries were coming down during the day on frozen ground as temperatures struggled to get above freezing, but the heaviest snowfall was not expected until this evening.
Motorists were warned to take care on icy roads.
