District councillors have welcomed a draft plan for where 2,200 new homes will be built in Wymondham over the next 14 years.

An action plan for new development in the town was backed by cabinet members at South Norfolk Council on Monday, which will result in the bulk of new development going to the south of the town.

Proposals to allocate land for 1,200 new homes at Silfield are dependent on improvements to the railway bridge in Station Road to ease a traffic bottleneck and flooding hotspot.

However, the council meeting heard that one developer, Persimmon Homes, was about to submit an application for homes on greenfield land off Norwich Road, opposite Waitrose supermarket, despite the land not being a preferred site for development in the Wymondham Area Action Plan.

John Fuller, council leader, said that the 'worm was now turning' and that developers could soon no longer use the five year land supply issue as a reason to build homes outside of the Wymondham boundary.

Tim Horspole, principle planning officer for South Norfolk Council, added that 2,200 new homes was the limit for the town for secondary school provision in Wymondham.

Local district councillor Neil Ward said the majority of Wymondham residents accepted the new housing in the town, but the upgrade of the railway bridge was a matter of priority.
