Police are investigating this morning the circumstances that led to two women dying in a three-vehicle crash on the A11 at Besthorpe, near Attleborough.
Officers are trying to ascertain how one of the cars involved, a green Peugeot 306 driven by a 46-year-old woman from Norwich, was driving the wrong way on the dual carriageway.
Officers were called to reports of the collision between three vehicles just before 11.30pm on Saturday, on the southbound carriageway of the A11, close to Silver Street.
The Peugeot 306, a blue Vauxhall Zafira and a blue Ford Focus were in collision close to 'Mr D's Diner' on the A11.
The female driver of the Peugeot died at the scene. She was the only person in the car.
The 30-year-old woman driver of the blue Vauxhall, also the sole occupant of the vehicle and from Attleborough, was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich hospital but died a short while later.
The occupants of the Ford Focus sustained minor injuries.
The Vauxhall Zafira and Ford Focus were travelling south and the Peugeot was heading north when the crash happened.
The East of England Ambulance Service Trust sent three ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance officer.
Four patients were treated for minor injuries at the scene and they did not need to go to hospital.
The road was closed in both directions and diversions were put in place while emergency services attended to clear the route and to carry out initial investigations into the cause of the collision.
The northbound carriageway re-opened at about 3am, while the southbound carriageway opened at 5am.
