Village's jazz festival hits the right note with music fans
Now in its 14th year, the Stradjazz music festival continues to attract musicians and music fans to the weekend event.
Organised by musician Bob Kerr, who lives in Stradbroke, the festival yet again enjoyed a successful weekend on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28 and saw different types of jazz musicians brought together. Money was also raised for charity.
This year Macmillan Cancer Support was the chosen charity - one that is close to Mr Kerr’s heart.
All profits were donated to the charity and a collection was arranged over both days.
“It was a brilliant weekend - every year we are packed to capacity and we raised a bit of money for Macmillan,” said the 74-year-old.
“My wife died of cancer last year, so I thought it was about time I did something to raise some money.
“We haven’t counted it yet, but I would roughly say we’ve raised £200.
“I will be very pleased to send the donation to Macmillan.”
Classic singer and double bass player Nicola Farnon and banjo player Sean Moyses were among the musicians who played at the festival, which was held at the Stradbroke Community Centre.
And Mr Kerr - who was once a member of the New Vaudeville Band in the 1960s and had a hit single with Winchester Cathedral - also played at the festival with his band, Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band.
“I’m a musician, and there are a lot of people I know from the road and 50 years in music,” said Mr Kerr.
“So you tell them: ‘I’m holding a jazz festival, do you want to come and play?’ and we get bands from all over to come to it. So we have a wide base of people who come and it’s good for the village.
“It’s a mixture of different styles of jazz and it means that people who don’t know much about jazz can come along and enjoy it.
“I got a card from someone thanking me and that’s nice. It’s been wonderful- next year will be its 15th anniversary and it will be held in September again.
“Originally we were only meant to have one.”
