Residents are set to be reconnected today after having been without phone or internet signal for almost two weeks.

Power lines to Wacton, South Norfolk were damaged when a 4x4 vehicle collided with a telegraph pole on Sunday, March 5, causing all service to the village to be disrupted.

BT engineers have been repairing the damage and replacing the lines for the past two days, with work set to finish this afternoon.

Resident Ina Wilson, 79, said: “It has been a nightmare as mobile phone signal isn’t very good and not everyone here has one, as there are a lot of elderly people in Wacton.

“We haven’t had phone or wifi signal for nearly two weeks and Sky told us it would be six or seven weeks before they are able to fix it.

“It is a bit ridiculous because we can’t contact anyone or email if our mobile dies.

“My husband, who is 82, has needed three emergency doctor visits in the past few months and the nearest surgery is almost two miles away.”

It is thought that difficulties arranging a road closure are contributing to the length of time it will take to fox the problems.

However, Norfolk County Council has said that in times of emergency works, such as reconnecting a village, short notice road closures can be arranged.

The 4x4 crashed into the telegraph pole during the poor conditions as a result of the snow, causing the pole to be damaged and wires to lie across the road.

A spokesman for Openreach said: “An engineer attended the site on the day to make the area safe. The engineering repair work of aerial cables is often complex and time-consuming.

“However engineers are working as quickly as they can and barring any unforeseen difficulties, customers will start to see their service being restored by today, Wednesday March 14.”

Openreach fixes the cables, which in turn will restore the phone and internet service to Wacton for all providers including Sky, BT, TalkTalk, Plusnet and so on.

The problems follow those in Garboldisham, where mobile phone signal problems left villagers using Vodafone mobiles unable to connect for several days.
