DISS U13 were worthy winners of the U13 Norfolk Cup, beating West Norfolk 17-12.

They had played all the attacking rugby against a well-drilled and defensively astute West Norfolk side.

The territorial advantage held by Diss might have led to a more emphatic victory but many of their assaults on the West Norfolk try line were repelled by the manic commitment of the visitors' defence.

Diss stamped their authority on the game from the first tackle via a thunderous hit by Kieran Baines, getting under Jack Pearson's hanging drop-out. Jack Scott scythed through the West Norfolk defence to take Diss up to West's five-metre line where they mounted wave after wave of attacks and were unlucky not to be awarded a try when Will Owen appeared to crash over the line with the ball.

The home side had to wait only a few minutes longer, however, before the industrious Matthew Warren burrowed through the pile of bodies in front of him to ground the ball. West came straight back at Diss, pushing them deep in to their own territory but a booming clearance by Harry Youngson alleviated the pressure.

The Diss line-out was functioning like a well-oiled machine, with James Shaw picking out his jumpers with his usual pin-point accuracy and Harry Purves clearing up any stray ball.

Surjay Rughani and Thomas Carpenter did a fine job in the front row to subdue their larger opponents and scrum-half Oli Tomson provided sharp service to his backs but the West Norfolk defenders, sailing close to the wind with the offside rule, were ruthless in closing them down. Pete Grey and James Child reciprocated for Diss to prevent further scores before half-time.

After the break Diss extended their narrow lead when Harry Croft put in a thumping tackle to dislodge the ball from West Norfolk clutches and Will Owen pounced in a flash to scuttle forlorn defenders and score a try which Harry Youngson coolly converted. West came back strongly at Diss, realizing that they had to score to stay in the game. They did so with a well-worked try in the right corner after carefully engineering an overlap.

Fresh legs in the form of Freddie Precious, Joe Seaman and Henry Barrett enabled Diss to rally and secure enough ball to put Charlie Pask in enough space to tear around the outside of the West Norfolk backs and dive over in the left corner.

A consolation try by West gave their score respectability but the day belonged to Diss and they celebrated in style as their 50th anniversary party for the mini and youth section followed the match.
