IT was ace news for Diss golfer Danny Maskell when he played at Bungay and Waveney Valley veterans' open meeting amd got a hole-in-one.

He was one of 93 competitors who took part from 21 clubs, some as far afield as Hertfordshire and Cheshire.

'The 12th hole is 147 yards,' said Maskell, 72. 'It bounced twice and rolled up to the green. You can see the green on that hole, sometimes you are blind. I could see it go in, which was even better.

'I was playing with two other people and I said 'it's a hole-in-one'. They didn't believe me, but it was in the hole.

'It was good - I was excited really. It's a marvellous achievement. It's something you aim for when you play golf but not many achieve it. You have a little bit of luck. Old or young can get a hole-in-one which is nice.'

In the competition he was fourth on countback in Division Three (handicaps 19-28) with 38 points.

It's the second time Maskell has achieved the rare feat, having got one at his home club about 25 years ago.

He has been a member of Diss Golf Club for about 45 years, since hanging up his football boots.

He played on the left wing for Diss Town FC and is still vice-chairman of the club. His dad Leslie played for Norwich City in the 1930s.

'I was captain of the golf club back in 1975. I've had great fun at golf.'

The event at Bungay was sponsored by the Norwich office of investment managers Brewin Dolphin.

Divisional director Richard Larner said: 'It was a fantastic event and the fabulous weather meant a great day was had by all. As always, the standard of golf was extremely high and well done to those that took part,' he said.
