Anglian Combination, Division Two: Mundford 2, Scole United 1

PUBLISHED: 17:19 01 February 2012

Scole first team lost to Mundford but yet again will feel that they could and should have got something from the game.

Scole started slowly and Mundford had most of the early play. Early on, Scole gave a needless free kick away and the floated free kick from Mundford was nodded in at the far post by the Mundford skipper Williams although Scole will be disappointed by their marking.

Mundford had another couple of half chances as did Scole with Ben Cussons going close and Mundford cleared off the line also.

Mundford got their second goal when a good move down the left culminated in a good cross and a good headed finish by Waites for Mundford. Scole though soon got back into the game. Poor finishing from Scole resulted in a corner and David Bloomfields near post corner was met with a bullet header by Darren Philpot.

Scole changed to 4-4-2 for the second half and spent most of the game camped in Mundfords half. Early on, the Mundford keeper tipped over a Bloomfield free kick and Luke Ashford was denied a goal by a fantastic last ditch tackle by a Mundford defender.

Mundford still looked dangerous on the counter attack but Scole were really cranking up the pressure. Again, the Mundford keeper made a good low save and Ashford was just second to the rebound. Also Cussons hit the bar and Ben Norton-Hugman blazed over when well placed.

Mundford broke near the end with Scole pushing so many players forward but Jack Buckmaster made a good block to prevent Waites.

With only five minutes to go, James Edwards broke the offside trap and as the keeper rushed forward he slid the ball into the path of Will Goulding to get the equaliser. However the Mundford linesman put his flag up and despite Scole protests that Goulding was well onside, the referee agreed with the linesman and soon afterwards the final whistle went and Scole were left to lick their wounds.

Despite their lowly league position, Scole have played well over a period of months and it will not be long before league results mirror their fine cup form.

In Anglian Combination Division Six it ended Yelverton 1, Scole United Reserves 0.

Scole Reserves promotion double header with Yelverton saw them go down to a narrow defeat for the second week running leaving them in fourth place and out of the promotion places.

In a close, hard fought game a single own goal by Simon Green was enough for Yelverton to earn the spoils.

Caister Vets 3 Scole United Vets 4

This top of the table clash did not disappoint, with the visitors travelling without skipper Ellis and Chenery. Scole got off to a good start despite an early booking for Hughes.

Manning was felled by a dangerous tackle and Caister were punished when Ruddock fired the free-kick home from 30 yards.

Caister made two changes in midfield and fought back to equalise, but just before half-time Payne burst through and scored at the second attempt. After the break, a long clearance from Bartram was latched onto by Payne. The home keeper parried the shot out to Robinson, who fired home to increase the advantage. Still Caister came back and caught Scole napping on the break to pull another goal back.

In truth Scole should have been further in front with Barrett and Ruddock both missing chances. Barrett di add a fourth, latching on to a back-headed clearance, off his right leg for a change. Caister pulled a goal back minutes fro time with an unchallenged header from a coner, but Scole held on for victory.
