Battles on the table tennis tables
PUBLISHED: 15:28 22 December 2010
The halfway point of the Diss and District Table Tennis season has now been reached and the league tables are beginning to show the likely positions at the end of the season.
In the first division Diss TT have made a dramatic improvement from their form of last year and currently sit on top of the division, although other teams close by have games in hand. Diss TT players Nathan Lamb and James Briddon have had some very good wins and close battles with more experienced players.
They certainly seem a force to be reckoned with and they will be near the top – or even at the top if they keep producing high-scoring wins. In their last match before the Christmas break Diss TT were only able to field a two- man team against Aslacton B but were still able to produce a 5-5 draw.
Palgrave Stars continue to remain unbeaten with a 7-3 win over Shotguns F. Terry Rayner of Palgrave Stars is the only player remaining in the first division with a 100 per cent record.
Palgrave Tornadoes had a good 8-2 win against Thrandeston to keep up their race for the top.
DC3 had a close games against a two-man Aslacton B side but could not quite convert the match to a win losing 6-4.
Dickleburgh remain the only team who have yet to win a match, but their young players are trying hard and Jack Chenery, in particular, has had good individual wins.
The Premier Division continues to be dominated by two teams, Pulham and Weybread Rejects. It was perhaps predictable that the match between the two teams produced a 5-5 draw.
However, Weybread Rejects were unfortunate to have to turn out with just two players against Shotguns A and they lost the match 6-4. This left Pulham in first place in the league. Weybread’s James Skilleter is still unbeaten, having won 21 of his 21 games.
Shotguns A had a very good win over Shotguns B 9-1 and Weybread Rejects also won against Shotguns B by the same score.
A mid-table clash between Flotmen and Roydon resulted in a 5-5 draw.
Pulham had an easy night against a two-man Aslacton A side producing a 10-0 victory for Pulham.
It was unfortunate that the premier teams seemed to be more affected by snow and a number of matches had to be cancelled.
Congratulations to Nathan Lamb and James Briddon from Diss TT.
Nathan and James were chosen along with two pupils from Old Buckenham High School to represent The South Norfolk Schools partnership in the County Table Tennis finals.
All four lads won all of their games and qualified as outright winners.
They now go through to the East Regional Finals at Grantham on Sunday, January 16.
