FOOTBALL: Harleston will be presented with the Anglian Combination Division Three trophy after their final game of the season at home to runners-up Aylsham.
Harleston 1, Nth Walsham Reserves 4
Harleston’s 100 per cent home league record was shattered on Saturday by a very strong North Walsham Reserves, bolstered by first team players, who needed a win to avoid relegation.
Town’s task was made even more difficult as they were without a number of first team regulars, including Paul Bliss, James Trudgill, Kieran Passey, Jake Imrie and Matty Goreham.
Harleston started the game well but soon found themselves a goal down when the visitors’ excellent right winger danced through and finished well. Shortly after, Walsham doubled their advantage with an almost identical goal.
Skipper Ryan London headed narrowly over for Town in a half of few chances for the hosts.
Harleston made a slight reshuffle at half-time in an attempt to get themselves back into the game.
Despite being on the front foot for the opening five minutes of the half, they fell further behind when an attempted headed back pass went past keeper Rob Goodwin, despite his best efforts.
Despite the game now being effectively over, Harleston did not give up and began creating some good openings, Lee West was unlucky to see his excellent free-kick saved superbly, and Bram Goodwin Wright’s effort was also kept out.
Walsham hit their fourth goal, an unstoppable free-kick from just over 20 yards – harsh on Harleston, who had been the better side second half.
Town finally got a reward in the closing stages when skipper Ryan London scored a well-taken volley from just inside the box.
JD Young MoM: full-back Nick Kent did a very good job against the threat of the excellent Walsham winger.
In the midweek game last week Harleston visited Beccles Town Reserves and won 1-0, with James Trudgill’s sublime chip over the keeper proving the key factor.
JD Young MoM: Kieran Passey, typical all-action display from Town’s energetic midfielder..
