Heywood Sports and Racquet Club's squash teams started their Summer League campaign this week.

They have a new-look first team managed by club coach Jack Bell and third team managed by the enthusiastic new member Mike Hegarty who seems to have kicked a lot of life into the squash section within the club!

The first team looked to build upon last year's Division Two success by holding their own in Division One and did so this week by picking a well-deserved 2-2 draw at home to Broadlands.

Bell handed two debuts to new signings Neil Cross and Alex Williams at number one and four respectively, snapped up from Stowmarket and Norwich clubs.

The evening started well with Alex racing to a 3-0 victory against the experienced Kevin Cooke with Williams covering the court extremely well, winning 9-3, 9-2, 9-4.

Next up at number two was Luke Watkins who made his first appearance for the club since a few years break.

Watkins raced straight out the blocks winning the first game comfortably before being robbed in the second 9-10 which then seemed to turn the match in Broadlands' favour with their captain Rob Hambrook finishing strongly, winning the match by three sets to one, 3-9, 10-9, 9-3, 9-1.

At number three was captain Jack up against Eric Plane. Bell opened up a comfortable 1-0 lead before being blitzed in the next two, but then dug deep to take the match into an epic fifth set which he won 9-2.

Final score 9-2, 2-9, 8-10, 9-6, 9-2.

Neil Cross was straight up against it and into the thick of the action as he faced 2010 Norfolk Champion, Ian Cox.

Cross battled hard but was beaten in straight games by a quality opponent 9-7, 9-3, 9-5.

This left the match at 8-7 to Broadlands which gave them the all important bonus points leaving the final score at Diss 7,Broadlands 12.

Meanwhile Mike Hegarty's third team travelled to Watton to face their first team and felt harshly done by to return with a 4-0 defeat. The team of Mike Hegarty, Tom Bell, Paul Harris and Dougie Miller fought hard but were just lacking the final touches which could of easily seen the result turn the opposite way.

Dougie Miller battled back from 0-2 down to level the match at 2-2 but didn't quite have it in him to go all they way and lost out 3-2. On the other court ex first team captain and veteran Paul Harris made a comeback for the club but was beaten 3-1 by Dev Mahatame.

Next up saw Tom Bell face Watton's captain Kevin Blake and he soon raced to a 9-0 lead in the first game before the experience of Blake saw him find a way back into the match winning 3-1.

The final game of the evening was Hegarty up against the class opponent of Tim Perry. Hegarty presented himself very well throughout the match but eventually lost out in five games.

Final score: Diss III 6, Watton 16.
