Diss 5, Norwich Dragons III 0
Diss knew that a win from this game would guarantee them promotion from Norfolk Women’s League Division One and in to the Premier Division.
The game started with end-to-end pressure with both teams defending well, but then Diss got into their game and started dominating.
Toni Glover was on great form and had a great run into the D, but was shut down by the defence, who had her card marked.
Sam Howard then put her mark on the game and did a fast-paced one-handed run from the middle of the pitch passing the ball into Sarah Woods to tap into the goal. There was then some great play on the left between Gaby Rolingson and Sophie Brooks who wouldn’t let anything pass. Howard then went on one of her trademark runs from the halfway line and reversed stick-flicked it to score a superb goal.
Diss were on top, but it was no pushover and Dragons’ young team showed determination and counter-attacked several times. But Emily Comer, in centre defence, was having none of it and solidly stuck to her ground and shepherded any counter-attacks back into the Diss attacking half.
More pressure from Diss resulted in two short corners, the second being converted into a great goal by Glover. The half ended 3-0.
The second half started with Glover on fire, with several shots being saved by the Dragons keeper; one shot was caught in the keeper’s pad, which should have resulted in a penalty flick, but was awarded a hit out for Dragons.
This was disappointing for Diss, but it didn’t deter them and Howard, who was on fantastic form, dominated midfield and was given so much space in the D that it was inevitable that she would score again.
She wasn’t satisfied with two and scored a further goal several minutes later with great style.
Further attempts from Glover were denied.
Dragons should be given credit for the continued persistence and being a young team show great potential for the coming season.
Player of the match: Sam Howard.
