Ely City 5, Diss Town 4 (aet)

Despite scoring four goals, to take his personal tally to ten in four games, Xavier Huckle was on the losing side as Diss Town were beaten in a thrilling FA Carlsberg Vase tie at Ely last night.

Ely took the lead after 110 seconds when a Tony Brown through ball was not cut out by the advancing Mark Camidge, in goal as Matt Webster suffered two broken bones near to his eye socket in his left hand cheek on Saturday, and Grant Robbins had time to control and shoot in.

Paul Nichols headed wide with a great 7th minute chance and Robbins should have scored a minute before half time as the first half ended with little sign of the drama that was to come.

Just 90 seconds into the second half Stephen Bell broke down the left and crossed low for Nick Impey to make it 2-0 from close range.

Johnny King came out and his overlapping runs down the right caused problems with Lee Pacey making a good 55th minute diving save after King had linked up with Jake Burton and Huckle.

In the 59th minute a long clearance from Camidge was not cut out and Huckle raced clear and rounded Pacey before shooting in from five yards out.

Within a minute Ely had restored their two goals lead when Impey broke clear and floated the ball over Camidge and into the far corner from 25 yards out.

Burton and Ben Soanes combined down the middle in the 73rd minute for Huckle to bring the ball under control and fire in from 18 yards out. Eight minutes later he completed his hat-trick to make it 3-3.

Soanes headed on to a Brendan Foley free kick and Huckle took the ball on and shot in from eight yards out. Jason Hunt with an 89th minute on target shot and Impey being blocked by Camidge as he raced clear in added time were the closest to preventing extra time.

The Tangerines went added two minutes into extra time when Steve Wright had a shot blocked by Pacey and his follow-up effort was kicked off the line.

Huckle collected the loose ball and shot in from 12 yards out. Robbie Mason missed a great chance for Ely in the 7th minute but made it 4-4 a minute later. Camidge came out and missed out in a tackle with Mason who moved on to shoot in.

Twenty-four minutes into extra time Mason was sent clear to shoot the winner past the advancing Camidge.

The defeat means that Diss Town will be without a fixture on Saturday October 3.
