MAGPIES Hockey Club Men's first team, currently leading the NE14 East League by eight points maintained their position with a comfortable 3-0 win over mid-table Bishop's Stortford.

This week they visit local rivals Dereham who sit at the bottom of the table. Nevertheless, Magpies should not under-estimate their Norfolk opposition.

No derby result is ever predictable and Dereham will do everything possible to upset the fast flowing attacking hockey which has been the hallmark of this season's play.

Magpies will be without left defender Andy Bedwell who injured a collar bone last weekend. He has been a pillar of strength in a solid defence all season.

The squad whilst missing him will benefit from the attacking play of Stuart Leate who has deputised extremely well when asked to in a number of positions.

This injury and one or two projected absentees during the next few weeks will give increased pitch time to other squad members who have been training hard and patiently awaiting such opportunities.
