Mellis won the toss and decided to field in damp conditions which paid dividends as Walsham wickets fell regularly throughout their innings and restricting them to 121 appeared to give Mellis a good chance of victory.

The only contributions of note were an aggressive 30 by Rothan and good knocks by youngsters Jackson and Waugh.

Keith Greenwood was the pick of the Mellis bowlers, thoroughly deserving his figures of 4-16 in an excellent 10-over spell.

Adrian Scarratt 3-28 and Barry Austin 2-45 also bowled well and Tim Courridge picked up a wicket. Mellis fielded well and even David Williamson held onto two rare catches.

In reply, Mellis started brightly and Martin Minta (19) and Chris Farrant (27) put on 45 for the first wicket.

However under darkening skies wickets fell, and at 59-5 Mellis were in a spot of bother.

The heavens opened and play was suspended for about 45 minutes while the pitch was covered.

On resumption Adam Williamson, with admirable assistance from Barry Austin (12) and Keith Arnold (17 not out) ensured that Mellis were always up with the asking rate and with nine balls remaining he hit the winning runs to finish undefeated on 37 and give Mellis victory by four wickets.

On Saturday Mellis travelled to Laxfield for a friendly and despite an enjoyable game were soundly beaten by a much stronger side.

The only performances of note were an undefeated knock of 25 by Rowland Warboys and good bowling by Tom Saunderson, who took the only wicket in the Laxfield inninigs.
