Archant Norfolk 2016
Old Buckenham hosted an in-form Downham Town side who had dominated their last three Norfolk Alliance games and recorded an excellent 19-run win.
After being asked to bat first in overcast conditions Bucks’ skipper Perry and Bint started solidly before Perry knicked Joss Stuart behind.
Thurley scored a couple of boundaries before being bowled, bringing Pentz to the crease who showed the same aggresive intent before the big South African’s innings was curtailed by a brilliant catch at deep mid-off.
Heaney joined Bint and the pair put on 60 in nine overs. However after a decent cameo of 38 from Heaney, the number five picked out Todd on the square leg boundary off a short ball from Gould.
Cameos from Lawrence, Meredith and Goodwin, along with Bint’s watchful 39, dragged Bucks up to 193 all out in the 50th over.
In reply Meredith was able to snaffle Stuart to a good catch at second slip by Shearing and then bowled skipper Yates but Harrison was getting away at the other end.
Thurley then removed Harrison caught behind by Goodwin and both bowlers tied down Todd and Gould for the next 10 overs.
This pressure told and Howes finally had his man after some brilliant bowling, Gould missing a straight delivery.
Tansley joined Todd at the crease as Howes finished his fine spell of 10 overs 1-20 and the introduction of leg spinner Austin tied the opposition down further. The match was further swinging Bucks’ way when Heaney was able to pull off a run out from nowhere with a quick pick-up and throw to catch Tansley short of his ground whilst backing up.
Todd was now running out of partners and Downham lost two other experienced players in Lancaster, bowled by a returning Meredith and Stuart, caught smartly behind by Goodwin off the bowling of Austin.
New batsman Sharp was run out, again by Heaney, while Todd brought up a brilliant 50 with some big blows late on. But the away side needed nearly 10 an over from the last three and Pentz bowled King d prior to Lawrence doing likewise to Hooton in the penultimate over to seal victory. Todd finished unbeaten on 66.
Old Buckenham travel to Fakenham on Saturday.
RDB Construction MoM was Glen Meredith for his great all round performance.
