Diss Town will return to the Ridgeons Premier Division next season after a four-year absence.

But the Tangerines are now out of the running to win the Division One title after being held to a 1-1 draw by leaders Gorleston on Monday. That race is now between the Greens and Whitton.

Diss manager Rob Taylor described himself as “happy” as his team secured promotion with a comfortable 2-0 win at Godmanchester on Saturday afternoon.

He added: “It was a good first half when we worked hard. We set out to contain them in the second half and restricted them to long-range shots.”

Taylor praised the efforts of his management/coaching team, Steve Culyer and Jason Fuller, and the work put in by the players this season, citing them as the reasons for a successful season.

Diss Town 1. Gorleston 1

Diss were held to a draw by Gorleston on Monday in a match featuring two already promoted teams. The match drew a season- high crowd of 180 to Brewers Green Lane.

The first half was a tame affair which only sprung to life with a few chances late in the half. A minute before the break Matty Webster came off his line quickly to close down Reece Hunn and make a save from an acute angle.

As the half went into added time Luke Catchpole sent Jordan Rocastle running down the left. He cut inside and found Danny Partridge with a fine pass. Partridge drew a fine save with Elliott Pride using his feet.

The loose ball fell for Rocastle to hammer a fierce shot from 12 yards against the underside of the bar.

Richie Woodrow was on target to force Webster to save in the 50th minute after Hunn won the ball and moved forward in the 50th minute.

The opening goal came to Diss in the 52nd minute when Jon Abbott played the ball into space for Rocastle to take the ball forward and hit a right-foot shot from 25 yards out just inside Pride’s right-hand post.

Seven minutes later there was a great display of skill from Rocastle as he beat a defender by chipping the ball over his head and rounding Pride, but he could only steer his shot just wide.

Webster made a good save low to his left to keep out a shot from Gary Williams.

Gorleston were awarded a penalty 10 minutes from time when Tom Deller fouled Bradley Hough. Darren Cockrill equalised with the penalty. Gorleston came close to snatching a winner with three chances in added time.

Godmanchester 0, Diss 2

DISS scored when Danny Partridge headed the ball down 30 yards out for Jonny King to return the ball for Partridge to run in and slide the ball home.

Five minutes later, Jon Abbott headed on, Partridge linked up with Jordan Rocastle who strode forward to shoot home, and somersaulted in celebration.

Diss Town play their final league match of the season when they entertain Godmanchester Rovers at Brewers Green Lane on Saturday (kick-off 3pm). For this match the club has decided to admit all U16s free of charge.

Diss Reserves can no longer win the Ridgeons Reserve League North after Lowestoft Reserves drew last Saturday. The Tangerines final position, either second or third, will be settled this Saturday when both Lowestoft Reserves and Yarmouth Reserves have matches.

Diss Town A’s second cup final of the season was delayed from Wednesday, April 27. They were due to play North Elmham at Dereham in the Dick Davey Ambulance Cup. However, Crown Fire League officials postponed the match while they investigate matters concerning North Elmham’s semi-final win. The final will now be played at Dereham on Thursday, May 5.

Brewers Green Lane hosts further finals in the next few days — the Norfolk and Suffolk Veterans’ League Shield final between White Horse Celtic and Solebay on Friday, April 29 (kick-off 7.45pm) and the Norfolk and Suffolk Veterans’ League Cup final between Norwich Trafford and Stowupland Falcons on Friday, May 6 (kick-off 7.45pm).
