Reece Oates followed in the footsteps of his Double Olympian uncle Colin Oates when taking a hard-earned bronze medal in an international juodo event in Eernegem, Belgium at the weekend.

The nine-year-old, who attends St Andrews Primary School in North Lopham and trains at the Lopham and Diss-based Kumo Judo Club, became the third in a generation of Oates family members who have taken medals in Continental Europe.

The grandson of Kumo Judo Club's senior coach Howard Oates took up judo shortly after watching his uncle take a seventh place at the London Olympics in 2012 and has already featured in two judo manuals. His uncle also appeared at last year's Olympics in Brazil - so the youngster has an excellent role model to look up to.

The next international competition is likely to be in Ede, Holland in June followed by a training weekend in Antwerp in October.
