Diss Film Society at the Park Hotel is showing The Death of Mr Lazarescu (15) on Monday at 8pm.

The film offers a different take on the ER theme. The Death of Mr Lazarescu was the first of the Romanian 'new wave' films to gain international recognition, and a Cannes award. (The acclaimed 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days is the most recent.) A black, deadpan comedy, it follows an elderly widower's encounter with the health services as he is moved from hospital to hospital by uncaring yet comic staff - redeemed by a caring nurse who gives Lazarescu, and us, hope. Luminata Gheorghiu and Ion Fiscuteanu may not be names we recognise, but they give brilliant performances in this engrossing, naturalist drama about the flaws, not only in healthcare, but in modern humanity.

Admission £4; members £3; students £2.
