Leap year holds a special place in the romantic calendar as it a tradition for women to make marriage proposals.
The custom is said to have started in 5th century Ireland. Then, in the 13th century, Queen Margaret of Scotland levied fines where if the man refused they had to compensate by either giving a kiss, a £1 or a silk gown - according to Diss auctioneers Gaze's.
They will be selling a range of beautiful wedding gowns, tiaras and shoes for that special occasion at its Roydon Road auction rooms at about 1.30pm tomorrow.
The dresses are all modern and unworn ex-shop stock as are the shoes and tiaras. The prices range from £40 upwards and viewing is from 2pm-8pm today.
A spokesman said: “We have had one other wedding dress sale but do not hold them on a regular basis.”
