TWO two one-act plays from Nobel award-winning dramatist Harold Pinter are on the menu from the Diss-based Mere Players.

The Dumb Waiter and The Lover will be put on from May 8-10 at Roydon Village Hall, and an initial presentation for the production will be held at 8pm on Tuesday at the Friends Meeting House, Diss.

The Dumb Waiter features two hit-men, Ben and Gus, who are waiting in a basement room for their 'appointment'. Ben is the senior member of the team and has no doubts about his professional calling; Gus on the other hand is developing something of a conscience and is feeling uncomfortable about their most recent assignment - a woman. The two while away the time waiting for their new target to arrive. Lively (and comic) dialogue contrasts with the underlying menace of their business - and the disturbing and bizarre appearance of the dumb waiter ...

The Lover features a husband, a wife and a lover; the eternal triangle - or is it? Richard and Sarah have a 'modern' approach to their middle class marriage. Sarah's lover fills in the emotional gaps in her day; Richard finds this a very practical and acceptable extension to their life together. He has his own way of fulfilling his additional needs. Strangely, their diversions bring them closer together in a most unexpected way.
