As a prospector hungry to buy oil rich land, Day-Lewis manipulates local landowners, exploits his adopted son and connives with the local pastor - who has his own agenda for the profits. As the oil flows, conflict arises between the protagonists, and Plainview's real self emerges as he sinks into a malevolent madness.
