Suffolk arts venue Wingfield Barns will be hosting The Royal Photographic Society's International Print Exhibition from tomorrow, direct from its opening show in London.
During its long history of over 150 years, the exhibition has gained a reputation for showcasing a wide range of genres and styles of photography, with cutting edge prints being shown alongside traditional work. This has ensured its unique status within the photographic world.
It was Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, a staunch supporter of the society, who suggested the RPS should collect photographs to record the rapid technical process in photography.
Each year, the society invites submissions for the exhibition from professional, student and amateur photographers worldwide. Prints chosen by the selection committee are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals.
An acceptance is highly coveted, and has helped many aspiring photographers to launch their careers and achieve recognition. Prints chosen by the selection committee are awarded, gold, silver or bronze medals.
The 2009 exhibition, the 152nd of its kind, features 121 prints which will be displayed in Wingfield Barns' galleries, at Wingfield. It will be launched by the society's president, Dr Barry Senior, at a private view tomorrow.
